When I look at overall female health and wellness, I strive to help women achieve optimal in ALL areas of their lives. Not just fit into their skinny jeans and feel sexy in a swimsuit but much more holistic than that. I want women to sleep well, to digest well, to cycle normally without symptoms, to poop well, and to have a hearty libido.
Libido and sexuality is really an expression of vitality. Vitality is the report card for our overall health.
So whether you’re looking to dig up your long lost libido, enhance sensation, combat dryness or just extend your toe-curling pleasure, you’ve come to the right place.
Before we get into the details, it’s important to understand that there’s no “right” or “wrong” sex drive for females. And there definitely isn’t any kind of rule for frequency that people should be having sex. I think it’s also valid to note that sexual stages of life are part of the human experience.
A woman’s libido is a finicky thing. Everything from your menstrual cycle to how much stress you’re under at home or work to postpartum changes can all have an impact like a car crash when it comes to shakin our groove thang.
However, with great desire to help women live their best lives, let’s dive right into what I believe to be the top 10 things you can do to turn your sandbox back into the slip and slide of yesteryear.
Top 10 Ways To Naturally Increase Female Libido
I feel like this is a hot spot for a disclaimer. Obviously, any suggestions discussed here should be approved by your physician and I want to encourage you to take my suggestion and dive into your own research.
These are what I believe to be the top 10 game changers to boost your libido!
LIFESTYLE CHANGES
1. Sleep
-
- I tell my women often, like it or not, the primary biological goal of our female bodies is to reproduce, to sustain life on this planet. If you’re chronically tired, your body knows the last thing you need is a pregnancy. When we’re really tired, our hormones don’t line up to promote a robust libido. The cheapest most effective way to prop up that sex drive is to protect your sleep health, so rest up girlfriend.
2. Stress
-
- When we’re stressed it puts our adrenal glands to work shifting our body into fight or flight mode. When our adrenal glands are in play our cortisol levels elevate helping us ‘run from the bear, or lift a car off a child’. This hormone works on skeletal muscle fibers, quite opposite than relaxing hormones that make us ‘available’ in the PM. When our cortisol is up and we have excess in our system, it eats up progesterone and our progesterone is vital for keeping our weight under control and keeping our happy hormones flowing. Try implementing things into your life to help bring down your stress levels.
3. Prescriptions
-
- Prescriptions for anxiety, depression, hormonal birth control are things we need to utilize from time to time, and there is no shame in that. However, just be aware that they could be the culprit to a missing libido. Whenever you choose to discontinue your libido should show right back up. Yet in the meantime, you will experience some side effects of less sensation, a little less excitement or enjoyment, etc… (2)
4. Low Fat Diets
-
- Good healthy fats are precursors to your body’s natural steroids and hormones that are vital building blocks to keeping our hormones levels high enough to be sexual, vital, and be excited about sex. We need good healthy fats in our diets like avocado, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil. To make sure you’re getting what you need I suggest you’re good healthy fats should never be under 40 grams a day. (4)
5. Working Out
-
- When I say working out, I don’t mean cardiovascular activity, I’m talking about strength training. Lift some weights! This helps manage weight, anxiety, depression. It also boosts our vitality because of the circulation. When we up our heart rate and are training the skeletal muscle it stimulates those muscle fibres which ups our testosterone. Healthy testosterone levels will have you anticipating hot moments throughout the day with your lover. Bow chicka wow wow!!
SUPPLEMENTS
6. Maca Powder
-
- Maca Powder has been heavily marketed as being effective at improving sexual desire, plus this claim is backed by research. A review from 2010 that included four randomized clinical studies with a total of 131 participants found evidence that maca improves sexual desire after at least six weeks of ingestion. It’s an herb that comes from Peruvian Central Indies and 3 mg daily improves your sex drive. I also want to let you know that it also boosts fertility, so be careful if you’re not planning to add a new member to your Christmas card! Being completely transparent I’ve used this post-baby #2 for a bit and I am happy to report, it works! (1,3)
7. Korean Red Ginseng
-
- Another great supplement to turn up the heat down there. It has to be specifically Korean Red Ginseng and I recommend 3000 mg daily. However, I suggest taking it earlier in the day as it can disrupt sleep.(5)
8. Tribulus
-
- Tribulus helps up your female testosterone levels. If you are doing the extract of it then I recommend 7.5 mg a day but if you’re doing the pill form then I recommend 750 mg a day. (1)
9. DHEA
-
- When you’re stressed and your cortisol levels are high it messes with your DHEA. DHEA & pregnenolone are vital in making our estrogen and progesterone. When we’re super stressed, our DHEA levels go down and that doesn’t help our vitality. DHEA is also a hormone known for its anti-aging qualities and really represents all things ‘vitality’. As a female, I would recommend 15 mg a day but you can take upwards of 25 mg a day.
10. L-Arginine
-
- L-Arginine is the easiest and most important. It is an amino acid that can be found in our foods. This amino acid in our body turns to nitrite oxide and nitrite oxide is great for blood flow and also improves sensitivity if you’re picking up what I’m putting down here! As a female, I would not recommend more than 500 mg a day. Side note, as an athlete you will notice enhanced performance and strength in athletic endeavors.
